Engineer III, Powertrain

Location: Riverside, CA

Pay/Salary Range: $85,000 - $115,000

Position Summary

Oversees the design, development, implementation, and analysis of powertrain & drivetrain components and systems relating to heavy duty vehicles, specifically transit buses. Typically performs multiple engineering‑related tasks in various assignments within the organization. Has broad knowledge of engineering procedures and assists in the resolution of complex problems. May guide and train less experienced engineers. Requires a bachelor's degree of engineering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leads the design, development, execution, and implementation of powertrain & drivetrain components and systems related to engines, transmissions, traction motors, batteries, shocks, air bags, pan hard rods, sway bars and various other powertrain & drivetrain components for heavy duty vehicles (i.e. transit buses).
  • Uses CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to lead the development of the design of powertrain & drivetrain components, to model 3D designs, and to produce detailed 2D engineering drawings.
  • Responsible for fulfilling customer requirements (i.e., work orders) considering design specifications and applications.
  • Execute engineering changes through established ECN (engineering change notice) processes and documentation.
  • Leads the creation and review of material part specifications and BOM’s (bills of materials).
  • Delivers complete engineering packages emphasizing efficiency in the manufacturing process.
  • Understand manufacturing processes with emphasis on metal fabrication and assemblies.
  • Verify designs through use of calculations and other analytical techniques and tools.
  • Define test requirements and interpret test results to validate designs.
  • Identify problems, root causes and be able to define & execute resolutions.
  • Understand and use lean principles as they apply to manufacturing and business processes.
Position Requirements

Bachelor's Degree of Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent education required.

Requires 4-7 years of related experience.

  • CAD software experience (i.e. Autodesk Inventor, Solid Works, Creo, or equivalent).
  • Familiar with Cummins IQA Processes.
  • Knowledge of Cummins Insite, Allison DOC-Hybrid, & BAE Systems IDS software a plus.
  • Experience in research and development of powertrain & drivetrain components and their application into vehicles.
  • Skilled in computer simulation, cost estimation, design optimization, design review, engineering analysis & design, feasibility study, mathematical analysis & modeling, prototyping, quality assurance process and reliability analysis.
  • Solid PC skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and layout.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing industry and vocational standards.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work directly with hourly production employees and leadership concerning manufacturing initiatives and progress updates.
