The BOM (Bill of Materials) Engineer is a specialized engineering data professional responsible for creating, configuring, structuring, and maintaining the comprehensive list of raw materials, assemblies, sub-assemblies, parts, and components required to manufacture a product. This role serves as the critical link between Engineering, Procurement, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance to ensure that the physical product can be built accurately, cost‑effectively, and efficiently.
Performs complex engineering data tasks and works closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams. Work is somewhat autonomous with regular leadership reviews.
- Manage BOM configuration and structure by establishing parent-child relationships between assemblies and components.
- Manage different views of product data, including EBOM (Engineering BOM) and convert into MBOM (Manufacturing BOM) structured by assembly sequence.
- Manage features, options, and rules within product configurators to generate accurate, order‑specific BOMs.
- Review, implement, and document Engineering Change Notices (ECN) and Engineering Change Orders (ECO).
- Assess impact analysis of part changes, revisions, or obsolescence affecting inventory, production, cost, and documentation.
- Input and audit data across foundational enterprise platforms, primarily PLM, PDM, and ERP systems.
- Establish and enforce standard part‑numbering schemas.
- Ensure metadata such as unit of measure, revision levels, weight, and material specifications are accurate.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain/Procurement to provide clean BOMs for accurate sourcing and cost negotiation.
- Align the MBOM with factory routing, assembly lines, and workstation capabilities to streamline floor operations.
- Bachelor's Degree of Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent education required.
- 2-3 years related experience in BOM management or data configuration.
- Proficiency in ERP/MRP software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Epicor) and PLM/PDM systems (e.g., Solid Works PDM, Teamcenter, Windchill).
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (VBA, lookups, data manipulation) for analyzing massive datasets and auditing.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
- High precision and attention to detail to prevent production or inventory errors.
