Overview
The County of Riverside's Treasurer‑Tax Collector Department is inviting application for an unpaid Student Intern in the Public Services 4th Floor Phones Unit. The internship will provide experience in property tax payment processing, mathematical calculations, and customer service in a public tax collection environment. The role is on‑site in Riverside County and offers a flexible workload of approximately 20 hours per week over a one‑year term, with accommodations around academic commitments.
Responsibilities- Handle and process all secured and unsecured property tax payments for current and prior year mobile homes and possessory interest, business personal property, aircraft, watercraft, unsecured loans, and supplemental tax bills received via counter, mail, and field collection efforts.
- Answer incoming telephone calls or direct them to appropriate assistance.
- Calculate penalties, interest, and any collection fees incurred.
- Send receipts for payments and notices for any amounts short.
- Send requests for release of lien or summary judgment fees on fully paid assessments as needed.
- Update procedures for specific assigned duties.
- Perform cashiering duties, including verifying, collecting, and receipting of monies for treasury deposits using the People Soft financial system.
- Verify, collect, and receive money for all types of property tax payments.
- Make change for customers.
- Maintain daily balance of a cash drawer using established procedures and be familiar with Treasury cash protection policy.
- Research cancellation of penalty requests and refunds.
- Process Transient Occupancy Tax payments and registrations.
- Process mobile home tax clearance requests and payment processing.
- Process installment payment plans and demands.
- Scan requests for cancellation of penalties, add records in the system, and process base payments.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (provide current unofficial or official transcript with cumulative GPA at time of application).
- Good verbal and writing skills.
- Knowledge or experience in payment processing.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a bachelor's or certificate program.
- Six months to one year of customer service and writing experience.
Applicants may be pursuing majors such as Art or Humanities, Communications, Marketing, Journalism or similar, Psychology, Sociology or other Behavioral Sciences, Public or Business Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Studies or similar.
