Position: Police Services Technician I / II

Job Overview

The East Bay Regional Park District is recruiting for a Police Services Technician I and II in the Police Administration Department of the Public Safety Division. The position is on‑site at Public Safety Headquarters in Castro Valley, California.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Respond to crime scenes to identify, document, collect, catalog, and process evidence.
  • Perform photography duties as requested.
  • Prepare detailed reports on collected and processed evidence.
  • Collect, catalog, preserve, package, and transport evidence and property as directed.
  • Log all evidence into the system.
  • Issue citations for parking infraction violations and issue crime prevention notices.
  • Arrange for towing and impoundment of vehicles.
  • Perform traffic and scene control, including at traffic accidents, crime scenes, fires, special events, and weather‑related incidents using hand signals, flashlights, flares, traffic cones and/or other barriers.
  • Move, lift, and position stanchions, barricades and other heavy objects to establish temporary traffic routes and cordon zones.
  • Takes reports of property damage, medical emergency incidents and minor cold (not in progress) crimes.
  • Process police, fire, medical and field reports.
  • Provide clerical assistance in a general support capacity such as typing, filing, answering phones, responding to inquiries from the public and other agencies, maintaining message logs, entering and retrieving computerized data, as needed.
  • Provide general assistance and direction to the public.
  • Perform gate closures and visual checks of buildings and facilities.
  • Collect and log monies from members of the public paying fees for towing, dog permits, report copies, fines, or other services.
  • Conduct high‑visibility patrols and information checkpoints to educate park users.
  • Assist in the coordination and participation in special events such as training exercises and job fairs.
  • Transport mail as needed.
  • Testify in court as necessary; perform First Aid and CPR as needed.
  • Perform dispatch work on a relief or as‑needed basis.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications – Technician I
  • Education: Completion of twelfth grade.
  • Experience: One year of responsible general office work experience with public contact, preferably in a public safety department or office setting; or 30 semester or 45 quarter units of coursework in criminal justice or a related field may be substituted.

Qualifications – Technician II
  • Education: Completion of twelfth grade.
  • Experience: One year as a Police Services Technician I with the East Bay Regional Park District; or two years of responsible general office work experience with public contact, preferably in a public safety department or office setting.
  • License or Certificate: Valid California Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
  • Knowledge:
    • Principles, practices, and safe work methods used in collecting, processing, logging, storing, and safeguarding evidence, property, hazardous materials.
    • Basic law enforcement theory, principles, and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs.
    • Proper safety methods and procedures affecting assigned duty station.
    • Basic interviewing methods and principles.
    • Customer service and public relations techniques.
    • Proper English usage including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
    • Modern office procedures and practices; computer applications such as Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Ability:
    • Learn, interpret, and apply departmental policies, rules, laws, regulations and ordinances.
    • Exercise sound judgment in maintaining critical and sensitive information, records, and reports in emergency or critical situations.
    • Write clear, concise, accurate, and comprehensive reports and statements.
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with diverse groups and people.
    • Multi‑task and adjust effectively to changing work assignments.
    • Follow oral and written instructions.
    • Perform general support and record‑keeping duties such as filing, typing, and making mathematical computations.
