Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION: Provides technical and analytical support to District technology programs in diverse capacities ranging from responses to user-support problems, to technology system development, implementation, and administration: monitors systems to ensure performance and reliability standards are met; and performs specialized duties in support of an assigned technology program area.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISE: Receives general supervision from assigned area supervisor. May provide lead direction to temporary staff and/or student workers.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: This classification is responsible for independently performing technical duties at an assigned department by supporting its multiple systems and associated hardware and software. Employees are required to have broad based knowledge of multiple technology areas and frequently use tact, discretion, independent judgment, and initiative in the performance of their work. Employees receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the department.

Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree with coursework in information technology, computer science, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience providing highly technical support to an information systems program; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Experience: Knowledge of principles and practices related to information systems, hardware, software, server-based operating systems, network monitoring, security, database administration, and related areas. Ability to analyze complex user problems, communicate with nontechnical users, document work, manage servers and devices, and coordinate projects.

A valid driver’s license and proof of insurability may be required to drive a District or personal vehicle.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Mobility to work in a standard office setting; vision to read and interpret printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require lifting up to 50 pounds with proper equipment. Essential functions require performance with or without reasonable accommodations.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Indoor/outdoor work with moderate noise, variable temperatures, and occasional exposure to hazardous substances. May interact with upset individuals while interpreting and enforcing policies.

Duties and Responsibilities – Examples
  • Provides technical and analytical support for assigned technology programs/systems; responds to client service issues using multiple diagnostic techniques; independently resolves issues or consults with colleagues/management.
  • Monitors systems for reliability and performance; provides status updates; assists in implementing policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Installs software patches and upgrades; maintains security; writes system-level scripts; analyzes, configures, installs, tests, and debugs software; supports administrative software and databases.
  • Designs and develops custom code and automation solutions; deploys policy restrictions to endpoints; configures hardware, OS, and support tools.
  • Coordinates incident resolution and advises departments on technology improvements.
  • Manages IT infrastructure projects with team members and vendors; documents progress and timelines.
  • Sets up and maintains physical and virtual servers; analyzes logs; performs backups and recovery as needed.
