Job Duties
Under direction, evaluates, installs, configures, tests, troubleshoots and/or maintains very complex third‑party software on computer systems in order to maximize computer response time and enhance overall system performance (e.g., AIX, Solaris, Linux, third‑party installs on UNIX/NT, UNIX configuration management & UNIX tuning, IBM P/Series, Sun Spark remote storage & switch). Participates in pre‑installation planning, reads technical computer systems/software manuals & guides, performs regression testing, installs new software packages/upgrades, monitors hardware & software, restores systems following massive software or hardware failures, maintains system security, and assists in system capacity planning, recovery, tuning & availability management.
AdditionalResponsibilities
Provides technical assistance to management & system users on network protocols, logical and physical topologies, operating system change control, and networking interfaces. Identifies, analyzes, and resolves software problems associated with teleprocessing applications and contacts vendor representatives to resolve system problems. Trains programmers and computer operations personnel in the use of software and hardware. Analyzes system and/or region dumps and error messages.
Writes exit routines and programs to interact with system software, recommends programming and operating standards, and prepares system performance and usage reports. Confers and coordinates with network administration in the design and maintenance of network operating systems and implements data communication services as elements of overall operating systems design. Performs other duties as assigned, including preparing written status reports and facilitating staff/team meetings, seminars, and training classes.
- Completion of an undergraduate core program in computer science that included study of Assembler, REXX, Clist & COBOL languages AND 2 years of training or 2 years of experience in software installation & maintenance for mainframe operating systems.
- OR 12 months experience as Systems Programmer II (class 64192).
- OR equivalent qualifications for employment as noted above.
3 courses or 9 months in UNIX.
Additional RequirementsSubject to on‑call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; required to carry a pager or cellular phone as assigned; required to work overtime and travel within or outside the state as assigned; must provide own transportation or have a valid driver's license.
