Position: Deputy Child Support Attorney I

Overview

The County of Riverside's Department of Child Support Services is seeking a qualified Deputy Child Support Attorney I to join the team in Riverside.

The selected candidate will appear in court on matters related to establishing, modifying, or enforcing child support. The incumbent is also responsible for conducting interviews with relevant parties before hearing dates to resolve or narrow legal issues, providing direction to paralegals, and advising and training staff on matters related to child support law and appropriate actions to take in a case.

Additionally, the incumbent will provide guidance on policies and procedures to ensure they are consistent with legal requirements; participate in statewide training, conferences, and/or work groups; and collaborate with colleagues to advance the department s mission. Travel throughout the county may be required. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.

The most competitive candidates will have experience in child support, mediation or conflict resolution, social services, family law, bankruptcy, worker s compensation, and enforcement of judgments.

The Deputy Child Support Attorney I is a natural progression underfill for the Deputy Child Support Attorney II. Incumbents are eligible to promote to Deputy Child Support Attorney II following 26 pay periods (approximately one (1) year) of active employment as a Deputy Child Support Attorney I with an overall satisfactory performance evaluation.

Meet the Team!

The County of Riverside Department of Child Support Services works with parents and guardians to ensure children and families receive court-ordered financial and medical support. Services provided included locating, establishing paternity; establishing, modifying and enforcing a court order for child support; and establishing, modifying and enforcing an order for health coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate, research and prepare child support cases for civil litigation and enforcement; handle appeals of routine child support civil cases; prepare trial briefs and check questions of law; present opening statements, interrogate and cross examine witnesses; argue points of law, and make final arguments or summations.
  • Present and litigate child support cases in the Superior and Municipal Courts; conduct interviews to obtain or give information; interview and advise law enforcement officers and the public in regard to the issuance of routine child support establishment complaints and enforcement actions; advise and train non-attorney child support staff on matters of law, policy and procedure.
  • Negotiate with attorneys and litigants regarding the disposition of civil actions or modification of charges in specific cases; conduct legal research in specific areas of civil and family law; analyze legal issues in pending cases.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports; review progress and development of cases with supervisory deputies; process child support complaints and claims for the County of Riverside Department of Child Support Services.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • License:
    Active membership in the State Bar of California.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver s License is required.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
  • Knowledge of:
    Legal principles and their application; rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings; the laws of the State of California.
  • Ability to:
    Analyze legal problems and apply legal principles and practices; present arguments and statements of fact and laws clearly and logically in written and oral form; perform legal research; work cooperatively with others.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.
  • Travel throughout the county may be required.
