Position: Licensed Vocational Nurse II - Mental Health Acute (Unit C)

The County of Riverside is seeking a Licensed Vocational Nurse II (LVN‑II) to join the medical center staff at the Arlington Campus of Riverside University Health System, located in Riverside.

Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, a nurse practitioner, or a physician, the LVN‑II will perform nursing duties within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act for vocational nursing in a hospital inpatient setting, outpatient clinic, or other assigned work.

  • Provide nursing care to patients within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act, including preparation for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, and care during treatment.
  • Administer medications using subcutaneous, intramuscular, intradermal, subdermal, and/or oral methods.
  • Take temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure of patients as necessary; apply and change dressings, care wounds; collect specimens for laboratory analysis; assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid‑level providers in performing examinations, tests, respiratory care and other treatments including minor surgical procedures, PAP smears, and colposcopies.
  • Perform venipuncture and injections of medications, including biological immunizations for pediatrics and adults; provide tuberculosis skin tests (tuberculin, coccidioidin, histoplasmin) as part of the tuberculosis control program.
  • Perform documentation as required within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act, chart treatments and medications, maintain clinical records, reports and charge tickets; collect data from patients; review charts to determine type of treatment required and assure appropriate scheduling and continuity of care.
  • Counsel, advise and educate patients regarding proper healthcare methods; set clinic appointments per established policies and procedures; refer patients for specialty care to outside agencies using knowledge of payor sources.
  • Assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid‑level providers in the administration of special treatments, examinations, and intravenous therapy; chart treatments and medications; maintain clinical records according to established practice.
  • Assist in the data collection, preparation, and implementation of patient care plans; participate in patient education and rehabilitation programs and document data appropriately.
  • Observe patients' condition and behavior, and report significant changes to the supervisor.
  • May act under the supervision of a physician, registered nurse or mid‑level provider as a nursing leader over health services assistants, certified medical assistants, office assistants and other LVNs, as assigned.

At least one year of successful experience as an LVN, preferably in a public health clinic environment, is required.

Knowledge:

  • Current principles, techniques, and procedures used in vocational nursing within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act; medical terminology, acute care procedures and equipment; medication administration and any policies and procedures of the setting assigned.

Abilities:

  • Skillfully perform the full range of vocational nursing duties and responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Learn and follow policies and procedures for the assigned setting.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, mid‑level providers, registered nurses, patients, and co‑workers.
  • Complete and maintain reports and patient records; make observations of situations accurately and report them so effective action can be taken according to rules of documentation and policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid California Vocational Nurse License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
  • Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association for professional healthcare providers.

Physical Requirements:

Lifting up to 25 lbs and standing for long periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Schedule:

6‑12‑8 with 8‑hour on Tuesdays (shift hours may be discussed during interview process).
