Position: Licensed Vocational Nurse III - CHS (Per Diem)

The County of Riverside – Riverside University Health System (RUHS) – Correctional Health Systems is seeking multiple Licensed Vocational Nurse III per diem positions to join the CHS‑Banning Correctional Facility and CHS‑SW Justice Center teams located throughout Riverside County (Riverside, Murrieta, Banning, Indio).

Overview

Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) performs nursing duties within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act for vocational nursing in the care of patients or inmates at County Sheriff/Probation adult and juvenile correctional facilities. The LVN III is the advanced level for LVNs working in these facilities and may have responsibility for emergency care nursing, directing and supervising staff, and managing outpatient mental health clinic or FQHC operations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and emergency care nursing duties under general supervision and medical protocols.
  • Provide the full range of professional nursing duties within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act.
  • Direct and supervise staff and operations of outpatient mental health clinic, FQHC, or adult and juvenile correctional facility when required.
  • Participate in training needs assessment, in‑service training, problem‑solving clinical and administrative issues, and standardizing related policies and procedures.
  • Serve in the absence of the registered nurse or manager in charge; supervise, precept, and mentor staff assigned to the clinic, FQHC, or correctional facility.
  • Take vital signs, perform dressing changes, wound care, specimen collection, venipuncture, injections, and skin tests; administer medications via subcutaneous, intramuscular, intradermal, subdermal, and oral routes.
  • Assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid‑level providers in examinations, respiratory care, treatment, minor surgical procedures, PAP smears, and colposcopies.
  • Document all procedures, maintain medical records, chart treatments and medications, and ensure continuity of care.
  • Provide patient counseling, schedule appointments, refer patients to specialty care, and coordinate with payor sources.
  • Participate in committee meetings, audit patient records, assist in patient education and rehabilitation programs, and act as a preceptor and mentor to nursing staff.
Qualifications
  • Minimum four years of successful experience as an LVN, preferably in a public health clinic environment and/or in a leadership capacity.
  • Experience working at County Sheriff/Probation adult and juvenile correctional facilities.
  • Bilingual candidates preferred.
Knowledge of
  • Current principles, techniques, and procedures used in vocational nursing within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act.
  • Medical terminology and acute care procedures and equipment.
  • Medication administration and policies and procedures of the appointed setting.
Ability to
  • Skillfully perform the full range of vocational nursing duties and responsibilities per the Vocational Nursing Practice Act.
  • Learn and follow policies and procedures for the setting assigned.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, mid‑level providers, registered nurses, patients, and co‑workers.
  • Complete and maintain reports and patient records.
  • Make observations of situations accurately and report them for effective action.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid California Vocational Nurse’s License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • IV Therapy/Blood Withdrawal certification by the Board of CA Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
  • Valid California Driver's License (required for driving to adjacent county jail facilities).
  • Must maintain a Sheriff’s Security Clearance, Level‑1 Security Clearance background investigation.
Schedule and Travel

Day shift hours: 6:00 am to 6:30 pm.

Night shift hours: 6:00 pm to 6:30 am.

Rotating schedule on a bi‑weekly basis; shift hours and assignments determined by department based on availability after start.

Position requires traveling to facilities throughout Riverside County (Riverside, Murrieta, Banning, Indio).

Physical Requirements
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Standing for long periods.
