Position: Senior Recreation Leader (Part Time)

Description

Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space/Bureau of Parks and Urban Forestry.

Operates a variety of motorized and other equipment. This position primarily works as a member of a three-person crew maintaining sports fields; in winter months this position assists crews with tree planting and landscape projects. Provides assistance to crews. Performs inspections and minor maintenance and repair on equipment.

Work Hours:

7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is an ALPHA position and is subject to 24 hour call during emergencies or severe storms.

Essential Functions
  • Operates a variety of motorized and hand equipment including mowers, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, chainsaws, weed eaters and blowers.
  • Performs mowing maintenance activities at various sites throughout the City of Norfolk including sports stadiums and athletic fields.
  • Assists crews during winter months with planting trees and shrubs.
  • Assists other employees on job sites with loading, unloading and cleaning up work areas.
  • Performs inspections, minor maintenance and repair on equipment as needed; services vehicles on a daily basis.
  • Performs related landscaping, labor and maintenance assignments as needed.
  • May supervise crew members in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Operates automatic and standard transmission vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, climb, lift a minimum of 75 pounds and work in adverse weather and environmental conditions performing manual labor tasks.
Education / Experience

Requires equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience operating heavy equipment. The preferred candidate will possess a Commercial Driver’s License.

Additional Information & Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license; applicants selected for an interview will be required to provide a copy of a current Division of Motor Vehicle Report (no more than 30 days old) to the interviewer.
  • Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Technician's license within six (6) months of employment.

  • If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre‑tax payroll deduction.
  • If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre‑tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self‑development and education. Permanent full‑time and permanent part‑time classified, unclassified permanent, full‑time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
