Laboratory Technician – Sciences (Natural Sciences & Kin) – Part‑time – Moreno Valley College

Position Type:
Classified / Confidential – Part‑time, 19.5 hours per week, 12‑month term, grade K, salary $36.09 – $43.93 per month.

Moreno Valley, Riverside Community College District.

Responsibilities

Develop, organize, implement, and coordinate laboratory methods and procedures for a diversified science department.

Prepare chemical solutions, reagents, and other laboratory materials in a timely manner.

Set up and dismantle experiments; assemble, clean, and store apparatuses and equipment used in laboratory experiments and demonstrations.

Maintain optical, mechanical, and electronic laboratory equipment, calibrate and adjust high‑tech machines, and troubleshoot equipment problems.

Order, receive, store, and issue inventory chemicals, supplies, and equipment; monitor inventory levels and requisition supplies as needed.

Participate with faculty in the planning and implementation of experimental design and preparation of laboratory exercises.

Prepare specialized materials, measuring and mixing reagents, chemical solutions, and stains using standard formulas and procedures.

Research products, prepare and analyze bids, calculate costs of materials, procure supplies, and install new equipment.

Develop and maintain laboratory safety protocols, enforce safety procedures, and introduce safety‑related improvements and modifications.

Provide primary support for instructional computing needs/software and technical support to faculty and students.

Maintain record‑keeping systems, generate spreadsheets and reports, and track laboratory budget expenditures.

Assist in laboratory training seminars and other professional development activities.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Associate’s degree with coursework in a scientific field (physics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related life/physical science) and two years of technical experience in a science‑focused laboratory.
Experience & Knowledge:
- Familiarity with laboratory methods, techniques, and procedures used in a college science department.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, materials, supplies, and procedures for life/physical sciences.
- Skill in preparing reagents, chemical solutions, and stains.
- Proficiency in storing and preserving biological specimens and cultures.
- Understanding of diagnostic tools for repair, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Awareness of environmental health and safety regulations affecting laboratory operations.
- Experience with inventory techniques and record‑keeping principles.
Abilities:
- Apply laboratory safety regulations and handle hazardous materials safely.
- Prepare and preserve specimens, cultures, and related materials.
- Synthesize, coordinate, and analyze data with precision.
- Monitor laboratory expenditures and maintain compliance with budget limits.
- Generate accurate computerized records, databases, and reports.
- Use hand and power tools for instrument maintenance.
- Set up laboratory equipment and materials for experiments.
- Organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.
- Exercise independent judgment within policy guidelines.
- Use computer systems and software relevant to work tasks.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers, students, and vendors.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Provide high‑level customer service to the public and internal personnel.

Physical Demands

Requires mobility in a standard office setting; light to moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds with assistance); dexterity for data entry; ability to stand, walk, and access equipment frequently.
