Overview

Provides subject matter technical support and leadership for the collection, identification, compiling, and analysis of observational and spatial data concerning a variety of vegetation, wetland, wildlife, marine, terrestrial, botanical, and avian species. Provides guidance for multi‑site environmental work and permitting projects. Ensures biological‑related project elements are conveyed and acted upon with a high level of quality and compliance. Provides situational guidance to project managers and leads on biological impact assessment, corrective/mitigation strategy, permitting, and restoration.

Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight of data collection efforts for a variety of biological and environmental data, including samples from air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices.
  • Prepare, complete, or review biological survey reports, data entry, impact assessment, and permitting activities for assigned projects such as Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act permitting, CEQA, NEPA, etc.
  • Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research findings and recommendations to address, prevent, control, or restore larger‑scale biological challenges.
  • Perform professional biology work and conduct investigations, inspections, and environmental studies and surveys.
  • Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, cross‑sections, and other illustrations for complex data interpretation.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations addressing complex biological problems.
  • Oversee cross‑functional teams in project work, permitting strategy, environmental impact assessments, field biology, and regulatory strategy, including budget tracking and task completion.
  • Participate in the application process for environmental permits and undertake resulting corrective strategies.
  • Provide high‑level oversight for desk‑based research, field work, and laboratory work, including measurements, data interpretation, and computer modeling.
  • Coordinate with clients, resource agencies, and environmental staff to provide strategic advice and subject matter expertise.
  • Develop a client base for providing high‑level biological risk assessment services, including business development and proposal writing.
  • Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development.
  • Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future‑ready solutions for clients.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field.
  • 10+ years of experience as a biologist conducting biological surveys, fieldwork, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, and/or construction monitoring.
  • Highly proficient in biology skills for specific ecosystems, habitats, and applicable species.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Demonstrated technical competence leading environmental permitting of assigned projects in sectors such as commercial, infrastructure, energy, etc.
  • Experience conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments per ASTM guidelines and industry standards.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to mid‑level to senior level team members, with strict QA/QC adherence.
  • Experience providing critical review for documents and preparing high‑complexity technical deliverables and plans.
  • Strong self‑leadership and interpersonal communication skills; ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels.
  • Proficiency with technical and business writing, office automation, communication software, and related tools.
  • Extensive critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze testing results and data and identify effective solutions.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
