Position: UTILITIES POWER LINE TECHNICIAN (LINE PERSON)

The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is accepting applications for the position of UTILITIES POWER LINE TECHNICIAN (JOURNEYMAN/LINE PERSON) to fill four (4) vacancies in the Electric Division
. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

City of Riverside Lineman are primarily tasked with system construction and maintenance of the 22,840 power poles, 510 miles of overhead, and 800 miles of underground transmission and distribution electric lines that serve the city's energy customers. This group also provides electrical emergency response and maintains the City's street light system.

Additionally, City of Riverside Linemen, under general supervision, will perform skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems, and communication systems; and do related work as required.

Typical Duties
  • Construct, maintain and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems including such things as stringing of wire; setting poles and anchors; and installing street lights, capacitor banks, transformers, cutouts, cross arms, switches, and insulators.
  • Work in below grade structures to pull, splice, and connect underground cables and other devices and equipment; install single and three phase electric meters.
  • Install, maintain, and replace energized transmission and distribution lines and equipment under all weather conditions and at all hours day or night.
  • Installs/removes/terminates/splices various types of cable; streetlight equipment; work site protection devices; residential and commercial meters; various excavations; overhead and underground residential & commercial services.
  • Prepares job site records, progress and safety reports.
  • Work as qualified electrical worker to access energized equipment, analyze schematic diagrams, blue lining wiring diagrams, schedule and apply for clearances, perform primary switching, etc.
  • Performs work on energized lines; tests on high voltage circuits.
  • Connects transformers.
  • Assists electricians and test technicians in substation and field as necessary.
  • Operates various types of equipment and vehicles mobile data terminals, (laptop/tablet).
  • Installs/repairs cubicle/transformer wells, transformers, capacitors & related line apparatus.
  • Instructs and directs subordinates.
  • Assist in the in-service training of apprentices; inspect, maintain, and repair electrical street lights.
  • May serve as Acting Utilities Electric Supervisor as required. Subject to emergency call-out.
Power Line Inspection Duties
  • Inspects high voltage distribution construction work for compliance with contract and local, state, and federal laws.
  • Performs construction reviews of design documents and provides estimates for field changes.
  • Ensures technical adequacy of construction methods and techniques.
  • Document site as-built conditions.
  • Inspect line construction work for compliance with industry standards.
  • Assist with the Powerline Technician duties listed above as needed.
Education & Experience
  • Education:

    High school graduation or satisfactory equivalent.
  • Experience:

    Applicant must hold a recognized completion certificate from recognized four-year program.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid class "A" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Possession of a current Journeyman Certification.
  • Completion of Rubber Gloving Training and/or Certification within six (6) months of hire.
