Under direction of the Water Supervisor, performs a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution systems and related facilities; cuts, connects and replaces water mains, valves and hydrants; monitors and maintains decayed and malfunctioning pipes, pumps and water distribution equipment; maintenance of pumping operations at well sites, booster stations, and sewer lift stations;
identifies repairs and maintains adequate reservoir levels, adjusting water flow from the Metropolitan Water District; provides required water treatment to store and distribute safe potable water for consumers; performs related work as required.
The Water Utility Worker I, II and III are assigned entry, routine to advanced journey‑level, complex and comprehensive work in the treatment and production of the City’s water as well as in the repair and maintenance of water lines, structures and distribution systems. The Water Utility Worker I is the entry level classification, responsible for routine, scheduled and structured work in water systems maintenance and repair.
The Water Utility Worker II is the journey‑level class in the series, and is assigned more non‑routine, complex and advanced calls for water systems repair and maintenance. The Water Utility Worker III is assigned in water treatment, production, and distribution and requires advanced certifications in water distribution and treatment.
- Performs potable and recycled water service repair and maintenance work including installing service mains and pipes; repairs water mains and fire hydrants.
- Participates in water system maintenance and repair work; locates, excavates and repairs water lines and related facilities.
- Erects barricades around excavations; cuts grass around fire hydrants, water meters; does semi‑skilled cement work.
- Installs, removes, and repairs large and small water services.
- Cuts, fits, lays and repairs water mains; cleans and flushes water mains; repairs mains, valves and hydrants.
- Inspects, tests, and operates valves, fittings and related water distribution equipment; identifies leaks, decayed pipes, spillages and pump malfunctions.
- Operates trucks and construction equipment such as backhoe and trenching machine.
- Installs barricades and routes traffic in a safe manner.
- Maneuvers and manages a variety of tools and equipment, including a jackhammer; pours and finishes concrete and blacktop.
- Prepares and maintains routine records and inventory lists for parts and supplies.
- Monitors and controls amount of chlorine and phosphate added to the water system.
- Conducts daily residual testing of chlorine, phosphate and other chemicals as required.
- Monitors and regulates flows at the Metropolitan Water District connection, booster stations, sewer lift stations, and wells; interconnects with other water suppliers; monitors and regulates reservoir levels; performs efficiency tests on pumping equipment.
- Troubleshoots equipment failures; determines and diagnoses malfunctions and repair issues; conducts service repairs and maintenance on water mains, water services, fire hydrants and other water facilities; repairs technical equipment such as meters, chlorinators, pressure‑reducing valves, pump control valves and related equipment.
- Assesses problems and performs preventive and operational maintenance on pumps, engines, SCADA equipment, electric motors, electrical switch gear, chlorine residual analyzers and other related equipment.
- Installs new pumping and testing equipment; operates water system manually or through a SCADA control system; checks and monitors sewer lift stations.
- Repairs sewer lift station equipment as required.
- Works with sewer contractors on sewer lift station cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Collects water quality samples as required.
- Responds to hazardous material spills.
- Repairs leaks to chlorinating equipment.
- Answers customer complaints and questions.
