The Equipment Operator performs the general and advanced practices and techniques of operating equipment with constant attention to safety of equipment operation in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of water utility assets, assemblies, and water related equipment such as large gates, valves, pipelines, structures vaults, drain covers, and similar equipment.
Experience and knowledge as demonstrated by practical application of techniques and practices specific to heavy equipment operations are essential. The necessary skills include effective, legal and safe operation of a variety of motorized equipment including light and heavy construction equipment. The equipment operator requires skills in preventive and corrective maintenance practices related to general construction that are normally associated with equipment operation and are generally obtained through applicable training and experience.
As the Equipment Operator, you will operate equipment ranging from standard vehicles and multiple axle trucks and trailers to a variety of heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, backhoes, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, water trucks, vac-truck and cranes used in the construction, improvement and repair aspects of Metropolitan's large-scale water.
Projects will include rough and finish grading, grade checking, road maintenance, large excavations, shoring installation, repair and relocation of large diameter pipelines, and service connections; installation of concrete-reinforced structures and encasements; construction of buildings and substructures; and heavy construction shoring (heavy beams and steel plates) activities.
In addition, you will assist associated work, including concrete breaking and building cast-in-place reinforced concrete structures; placing and tying reinforcing steel and placing and finishing concrete; working inside large diameter pipes in residential streets and underground substructures; and you will work and travel to Metropolitan’s remote desert locations throughout the year, it is estimated at eight weeks throughout the year. Travel typically happens in one or two-week increments but can vary greatly depending on the project's scope.

This opening is for the Operations & Maintenance Technician III
- Equipment Operator located in the Construction Services Unit at our Lake Mathews Reservoir Facility in Riverside.
- Performs general and advanced equipment operation.
- Perform Preventive Maintenance (PMs), Corrective Maintenance (CMs), and improvements.
- Rebuild and repair water conveyance systems, treatment and hydroelectric plants.
- Performs roadway maintenance.
- Prepare specific projects by mixing, laying, placing asphalt and concrete.
- Maintaining and repairing Right‑of‑Ways to ensure access to pipelines, aqueducts, powerlines and communication sites.
- Perform and/or assist with major improvements and site shutdowns.
- Recognizes and avoids harming endangered species, protected vegetation, and weed abatement in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.
- Assists with injection of sodium hypo chloride, sodium bisulfate and copper sulfate into aqueducts and reservoirs to control algae.
- Performs general preventive and corrective maintenance on light and heavy equipment in both shop and field environments to maintain equipment in proper and safe working order. Operates heavy equipment such as semi‑tractor trailers, cranes, graders, loaders, low bed and dropeck trailers, dump trucks of varied capacities (10 yards or higher) in accordance with traffic laws and regulations upon public and private Right‑of‑Ways.
