$88,093 – $99,201 annual (FY 2026) or $40.57 – $45.68 per hour; expected pay scale up to $43.90 per hour.
Work ScheduleFull-time (100%); varied schedule; may require overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call‑back.
Job SummaryThe Irrigation Mechanic performs testing, inspection, repair, and maintenance on irrigation systems and equipment. Responsibilities include programming central irrigation control systems and field controllers, maintaining valves, sprinklers, piping, and control wiring, coordinating with campus grounds, and contributing input on new construction and landscaping projects. The role requires accurate documentation of all operations, responding to work orders and emergencies, and adhering to all University and departmental safety guidelines.
Communication with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty, and students is essential.
- Repair, replace, and maintain irrigation mainlines, lateral pipes, valves, heads, sprinklers, and control modules.
- Program and troubleshoot central irrigation control systems and field controllers; use electronic instruments to locate and repair underground valve wiring.
- Read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, and diagrams; assist in installation of new irrigation systems per approved drawings.
- Respond to service requests and emergency situations during or after hours.
- Maintain detailed, accurate electronic and written documentation of inspections, testing, and maintenance.
- Coordinate with campus grounds personnel and contractors on construction and repair projects.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, faculty, and students to resolve issues and provide customer service.
- Education: High school diploma; preferred degree in landscape irrigation design or related field.
- Experience: Minimum four (4) years in irrigation skilled trade, including design, installation, repair, and maintenance; experience with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic irrigation equipment.
- Technical
Skills:
Ability to operate tractors, backhoes, trenchers, and utility trucks; proficiency with hand and power tools, grinders, pneumatic hammers, and welding. - License: Valid driver’s license required.
- Soft Skills: Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and follow instructions; customer‑service oriented.
- Other Requirements: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds; willingness to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours; compliance with safety regulations.
