Overview
The Transport Advanced Provider (Paramedic) is responsible for providing high quality critical care and transportation of critically ill or injured patients to the appropriate medical facilities utilizing standards and guidelines established by Mercyhealth Medical Directors. The transport Paramedic is a key member of the Critical Care (ICU), Emergency Department (ED), and demonstrates the highest quality of emergency/critical care standards of practice and commitment to safety.
ResponsibilitiesEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide pre‑hospital advanced life support care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility; maintain thorough patient care documentation (Trauma Soft/Epic) in a timely manner.
- Practice within scope of practice as defined by the State of Illinois/Wisconsin and Mercyhealth; maintain competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills through ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
- Communicate educational needs to program leadership and participate in ongoing educational programs.
- Provide patient care as assigned and per routine, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.
- Perform advanced skills and procedures approved by Mercyhealth; maintain documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, safety training (OSHA, HIPAA), and advanced procedures.
- Act as a role model, educator, and clinical resource; serve as a preceptor and/or participate in onboarding/orientation of new partners and students.
- Maintain awareness of current issues related to pre‑hospital care through professional activities, including national and state legislative involvement.
- Assist with routine maintenance of the ambulance, equipment and facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and professional appearance.
- Function as a CCTT ground team member by attending pre‑call briefings and post‑call debriefings; assist in pre‑call activities such as radio, navigation, and weather observation.
- Comply with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment; conduct safety briefings as needed.
- Assist with airway management, chest tube placement, CVP, and splinting interventions by gathering appropriate supplies needed for procedures.
- Float to outlying Mercyhealth facilities (Janesville, Rockford, Walworth, Harvard) based on identified needs/staffing models.
- Maintain medical records of current patients and process patient charges and orders for supplies as needed.
- Minimum two years (minimum of 4,000 hours) of recent experience in a high volume 911 system and Advanced Life Support (ALS) experience.
- Preferred: five (5) years of experience; previous Critical Care transport experience preferred.
- National Registry Certificate required.
- Paramedic license in the State of practice is required.
- Dual State of Illinois and Wisconsin licensure required within 90 days.
- BLS/CPR required; ACLS and PALS required within 30 days.
- NIMS Training IS 100, 200, 700, 800 and Hazmat within 90 days.
- EVOC driving course completion within 3 months of hire.
- Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within 3 months of hire.
- National Institute Healthcare Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within 1 year of hire.
- Pre‑hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) within 3 months of hire.
- Specialty certification: CCP‑C or equivalent required within 2 years of hire.
- Triage Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) attendance required within 1 year of hire.
- Passing the Motor Vehicle Report.
- Illinois and Wisconsin Health Care Workers Background Check.
- Must be able to follow written or oral instructions.
- Strong organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication, quality customer service.
- Grammar/spelling proficiency; ability to read and comprehend written instructions and follow verbal instructions.
- Basic PC skills.
- Manage stress appropriately; make decisions under pressure; handle multiple priorities; work independently.
