OVERVIEW
The transport Advanced Provider (Paramedic) is responsible for providing high quality critical care and transportation of critically ill or injured patients to the appropriate medical facilities utilizing standards and guidelines established by Mercyhealth Medical Director(s). The transport Paramedic is a key member of the Critical Care (ICU), Emergency Department (E.D.), and demonstrates the highest quality of emergency/critical care standards of practice and commitment to safety.
The role includes caring for patients, preparing and compiling records, and processing orders in the hospital setting under direction of nursing staff, by performing the following duties, supporting the nursing philosophy.
3x12 hour shifts, weekend rotation. Shift: Nights.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESProvide pre-hospital advanced life support care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility; maintain thorough patient care documentation (Trauma Soft/Epic) in a timely manner. Practice within scope of the State of Illinois/Wisconsin and Mercyhealth. Maintain competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills through ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences. Communicate educational needs to program leadership. Provide patient care as assigned and per routine, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.
Perform advanced skills and procedures as approved by Mercyhealth. Maintain documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and safety training, OSHA and HIPAA training, clinical rotations, and advanced procedures. Attend educational programs as required by the medical director. Serve as a role model, educator and clinical resource. Participate regularly in departmental activities, simulation, projects and committees (including research and publishing opportunities).
Maintain awareness of current issues related to pre-hospital care through professional activities. Act as a preceptor and/or participate in onboarding/orientation of new partners and students. Clearly communicate program goals and objectives. Be knowledgeable in the use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Mercyhealth. Report medical equipment failures and take initial steps to insure repair of equipment as directed.
Maintain adequate supplies within program/ambulances to deliver patient care. Assist with routine maintenance of the ambulance, equipment and facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and professional appearance to insure rapid response to all transport requests. Function as a CCTT ground team member by attending pre‑call briefings and post‑call debriefings. Assist in pre‑call activities such as radio, navigational, and weather observation.
Comply with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment. Conduct safety briefings as needed. Participate regularly in Mercyhealth meetings, activities, projects and committees (including research and publishing opportunities). Participate in patient and referring institution follow‑up and planned outreach marketing and education activities. Maintain a clean work and patient environment. Process orders in an accurate and timely manner.
Answer the telephone and call lights appropriately, provide information or relay messages to patients and staff. Maintain and order supplies— scanning, stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies within departments/ambulances. Perform venipuncture, IV access, 12‑lead acquisition, blood glucose analysis, and CPR as ordered/directed. Assist with airway management, chest tube placement, CVP, and splinting interventions/aplications by gathering appropriate supplies needed for procedures.
Float to outlying Mercyhealth facilities (Janesville, Rockford, Walworth, Harvard) based on identified needs/staffing models. Direct visitors to patients' rooms. Maintain medical records of current patients. Process patient charges and order supplies as needed.
