Job Description
The Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced‑level respiratory care to patients designed to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control deficiencies or abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system within the prescription of the ordering physician. This position serves as a resource to the CRT staff and may be responsible for special clinical projects or assignments as designated by leadership to meet departmental needs.

Part‑time, 24 hours/week, Night Shifts - Department:
Respiratory Therapy, Riverton Hospital
- Performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol. Obtains arterial gases. Oversees and troubleshoots equipment operation for optimal patient care. Initiates Respiratory Protocol and interventions based on assessment interpretation.
- Administers medications safely and evaluates their effectiveness. Ensures patient progress is communicated to staff, physicians, and other departments.
- Maintains awareness of the assigned patient’s overall condition, communicates and shares information with physicians and nurses, and makes appropriate care recommendations. Recognizes educational needs of patients and families, teaching self‑care techniques and modalities.
- Completes documentation per departmental standards, declares productivity, monitors supplies and equipment, and utilizes low census time effectively.
- Participates in quality and patient safety initiatives, identifies improvement areas, and contributes to departmental meetings with feedback.
- Promotes Respiratory Care profession and serves as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff. Engages in quality improvement and research activities.
- May float to other departments within scope of competency based on business needs.
- May be placed on‑call during a scheduled shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of a NBRC approved Respiratory Therapist program; education from an accredited institution.
- Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT).
- Current license as Registered Respiratory Therapy in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
- Specific certifications as required (e.g., PALS, ACLS, NRP).
- Read and interpret information and labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
- Communicate verbally and listen to spoken information, alarms, and needs during emergency situations.
- Use manual dexterity to manipulate complex equipment; frequent computer use and typing for documentation.
- Lift, transfer, and move patients; bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies; handle items up to heavy weights.
- Walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients, pushing/pulling gurneys and equipment, navigating crowded rooms.
- Stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
