Overview
The Medical Interpreter coordinates and delivers both verbal and written language interpretation for patients, families, and caregivers. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with a schedule of Monday – Friday, 3:00 PM – 12:00 AM.
Responsibilities- Interpret medical and general information with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes for patients, families, and Intermountain Health staff, using appropriate communication methods according to the individual’s developmental age and mental condition.
- Interpret complex medical information, demonstrating expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system.
- Act as a cultural mediator, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and superior intercultural communication skills.
- Render unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information in the proper cultural context.
- Adhere to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters; demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
- Manage time productively; respond to requests in a timely manner and provide staff with an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments.
- Refer staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines.
- Use computer, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry, and other communication purposes within the work environment.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all interpretation events; ensure data across multiple platforms or sources is consistent and accurate.
- Translate written material into one or more languages, ensuring meaning, context, and localization are maintained.
- Complete assignments in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy.
- Successful completion of a pre-hire skills assessment.
- Excellent oral and written command of both source and target language(s) to obtain a “Professional Proficiency” or Level 3 on the ILR scale (or equivalent as approved by Manager), including specialized healthcare terminology.
- Ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with a high degree of accuracy in both languages.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment; prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to function as part of a team, with the flexibility and good judgment to work independently.
- Certificate of completion from a 40-hour Professional Medical Interpreter course.
- For candidates who do not meet the Professional Medical Interpreter course requirement: may be considered if one of the following qualifications is met (if hired, complete the 40-hour course within six months):
- Interpreting certification in a different field (e.g., court)
- College degree in translation or working language
- Two years of experience as a professional interpreter
- Two years of experience working as an interpreter in healthcare settings.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Interpretation or Translation, Languages or Communications.
- National Certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from CCHI or NBCMI;
In Utah:
State Certified Medical Language Interpreter License by DOPL. - Completion of a college-level medical terminology course; knowledge of EPIC.
- Ability to read information, labels, documents, and monitors; assess customer needs; frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors.

Intermountain Health Riverton Hospital, Riverton, Utah - Schedule:
40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 3:00 PM – 12:00 AM - Pay Range: $21.70 – $31.90 hourly; actual rate dependent upon experience
