Registered Nurse Newborn ICU

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of newborn patients in NICU Level 2. The RN utilizes the nursing process, technology, therapeutic interventions, evidence‑based practice, and coordination with other health team members. The unit is staffed 24/7 with a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and daily Neonatology coverage, serving 32‑week gestation and older neonates.

• Assess – perform appropriate assessment of the physical, social, and psychological status of patients, including cognitive, communicative, and developmental skills where appropriate.
• Plan – use assessment information and critical thinking skills to collaboratively develop individualized plans of care, involving patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
• Implement – direct the interdisciplinary care team through effective delegation, coordination, and collaboration; provide or delegate care consistent with the plan of care and clinical guidelines.
• Evaluate – review patient responses to interventions, assess achievement of goals, and revise the plan of care as needed.
• Professionalism – promote the nursing profession, integrate legal and ethical standards into practice, comply with regulatory standards, and maintain accurate documentation.
• Skills – provide lactation support; manage NICU cares such as CPAP, ventilators, chest tubes, extended dwell IV lines, surfactant administration; attend deliveries with neonatal resuscitation; and perform other standard neonatal care.

• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in state of practice; transfer of compact licenses to the state within 60 days of employment.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or willingness to obtain within four years of hire.
• Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

• One or more years of RN work experience.
• NICU RN work experience.
• BSN required as of 4/27/2025; earlier hires maintained prior requirements.

• Ability to see, read, and interpret information, labels, and monitor displays.
• Frequent verbal communication, hearing, and interpreting alarms and patient needs.
• Manual dexterity for manipulation of complex equipment, frequent computer use, typing, and medication preparation.
• Capacity to lift, transfer, and move patients; bend, carry, and push or pull gurneys and equipment, including heavy items.
• Staying in a stationary position for extended periods; walking and assisting with patient ambulation and supply distribution in crowded, busy rooms.
• For roles requiring driving, ability to operate a vehicle, including seeing and reading signs and traffic signals.
