Description
Performs a variety of routine legal clerical work in the preparation and processing of municipal court cases, records, and reports.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Types and processes a variety of forms, correspondence, reports, and other items requiring knowledge of court policies and procedures.
- Processes summonses and complaint cards issued by the City; maintains a file of violation dispositions, issues warrants and notices of overdue payment.
- Maintains municipal court dockets; sets court dates.
- Prepares, assembles, and checks materials for each court session; assembles and checks bail monies; and issues subpoenas.
- Accepts and receives fines established and ordered by the Court; issues receipts and maintains appropriate records. Maintains a log showing disposition of all cases scheduled in the municipal court; keeps a transcript of court sessions and submits reports as required.
- Answers public inquiries and complaints of a less technical nature and directs other inquiries as appropriate.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Municipal Court Clerk.
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three years of increasingly responsible experience in general clerical work, including one year in a court, legal, or related setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language SkillsAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Skills- Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Working knowledge of court practices and procedures.
- Skill in the operation of word processing equipment.
- Ability to perform complex clerical work requiring the exercise of independent judgment.
Ability to be bonded.
Physical DemandsEmployees are regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May need to lift or move up to 10 pounds. Requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentThe noise level is usually moderate.
