Homebound and District Placement Special Education Teacher (SPED)

Position Summary

To provide high-quality, research-based instruction to students with disabilities while ensuring all legal and procedural requirements are met. This position combines classroom teaching responsibilities with case management duties, including developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans, monitoring student progress, collaborating with general education teachers and related service providers, and communicating with parents and school teams. The role requires maintaining professional standards, promoting student safety, and fostering positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.

Responsibilities
  • Be familiar with and abide by school district policies and to stay current in changes in such policies through procedures described by the Board.
  • Establish and foster a cooperative working relationship with the staff of the building to which the teacher is assigned, as well as with other District personnel.
  • Exercise mature and professional judgment in teaching and in associations with staff and students.
  • Participate in professional activities as part of the teaching assignment.
  • Demonstrate high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information regarding colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Maintain current PTSB certification in appropriate teaching area(s).
  • Maintain adequate and current knowledge of developments within the respective teaching areas and within the areas of instruction and learning.
  • Provide for reasonable care and safety of students who are assigned to them at all times.
  • Responsible for the daily safekeeping of students in their charge; must have ability to safely escort assigned students off school premises or otherwise manage students while in emergency situations. This includes following all appropriate crisis management protocols used by the District.
  • Provide proper care and reasonable security for all District property in their custody.
  • Seek to establish a school climate, which will promote appropriate student discipline.
  • Consistently supports and assists the building staff in maintaining order and discipline among students.
  • Utilizes instructional materials and other educational resources in a competent and effective manner.
  • Makes use of technology for instructional purposes as well as for record keeping, administrative and other non-instructional uses as may be required.
  • Serve as Case Manager (Frontier, DRC) for students referred for multidisciplinary evaluations and for students already qualified for special education, ensuring all activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Track and manage timelines for placement reviews, annual IEP meetings, and three-year re-evaluations for students receiving special education services.
  • Monitor the academic and developmental progress of students with IEPs to ensure goals are being met.
  • Review and oversee documentation by teachers and related service providers, verifying that progress on annual goals and short-term objectives is accurately recorded and updated.
  • Develops and implements IEPs for students to include present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP.
  • Provide homebound and/or services at additional placements throughout the district in compliance with each student’s IEP.
