Responsibilities
- Perform patient assessments; be thorough and accurate in documenting patient complaints, vital signs, current medication, and allergies, and document medications administered.
- Observe and record patient behavior.
- Perform physical examinations and diagnostic tests.
- Collect patient health history.
- Utilize the nursing process to adapt interventions to meet age‑appropriate care, including physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs, in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
- Assist providers (MD, PA, NP) in procedures such as wound dressings, pelvic exams, laceration repairs, and other treatment options.
- Attend to the needs of patients and visitors.
- Assure patients as needed; allay fears and answer questions as necessary.
- Exhibit cooperation and a positive attitude toward other clinical and medical departments.
- Complete incident and error forms when appropriate.
- Follow procedure for authorized medication administration and narcotic control.
- Communicate questions about the appropriateness of medical care through the chain of command as needed.
- Perform treatments and procedures as directed, within the individual’s training and capabilities, including diagnostic exams and procedures, cardiac monitoring, and IV medication administration as directed by a physician.
- Ensure patients are seen in an orderly and fair manner, explaining delays and waiting times; acutely ill and injured patients are triaged and seen first.
- Initiate evaluation and care of the patient prior to the physician’s arrival according to standing orders; consult with supervisors and doctors to decide on the best treatment plan.
- Prepare patients for examination and assist as necessary; arrange for follow‑up care or referral.
- Complete necessary forms and logs, documenting medications and patient care in a timely and accurate manner.
- Arrange for the transfer of patients to other departments or facilities (e.g., Emergency Department).
- Assist the provider on duty (MD, PA, or NP) with BLS, ACLS or PALS algorithms and contact 911 to transfer patients to the Emergency Department.
- Counsel and educate patients and their families on treatment plans.
- Read and interpret patient information, making treatment decisions when appropriate.
- Direct CMAs and CNAs as appropriate.
- Research ways to improve healthcare processes and improve patient outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned to maintain and enhance the operation of the department.
