Job Role

An Installation Laborer (also referred to as a Sign Crew Laborer or Traffic Control Laborer) provides the physical effort required to execute project plans on‑site. This is an entry‑level role that focuses on manual tasks, equipment set‑up, and site safety.

Core Responsibilities
  • Material handling: load, unload, and move building materials such as signs, cones, and barricades, and tools to the appropriate locations on‑site.
  • Installation: assist in the physical installation of products, dig postholes by hand, operate jackhammer to install bases, use hand tools to build signs, and assemble or set up traffic control devices.
  • Traffic control support: distribute signs and markers in designated patterns and may act as a flagger to stop or direct traffic flow safely around the work crew.
Working Conditions
  • Hours:

    typical work weeks range from 40–60 hours, with potential for more during peak project seasons.
  • Weekend work: not typical but may be required based on project deadlines or emergency repairs.
  • Travel: requires statewide travel (1–5 days per week) and may involve overnight stays.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Valid and clean driver’s license.
  • High school diploma preferred, but not strictly required for entry‑level labor positions.
Physical & Work Requirements / Skills
  • Manual labor & stamina: lift, carry, and push materials weighing up to 50–90 lbs.
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme heat.
  • Tool proficiency: use hand and power tools such as drills, saws, pneumatic post drivers, and jackhammers.
  • Material handling Dexterity: load/unload materials safely and keep worksites organized.
  • Hazard awareness: constant alertness to moving traffic and mechanical equipment.
  • Plan interpretation: basic ability to read and follow project maps, blueprints, or technical instructions.
  • Communication: clear verbal communication for coordinating with crew members and responding to inquiries from the public.
  • Reliability & punctuality: must arrive early for tight schedules.
  • Teamwork: ability to take direction from a foreman and work collaboratively in high‑pressure environments.
