An Orthopedic Technician is a specialist in applying a cast to the limbs and other parts of the patient's body following an accident, orthopedic condition, or post-surgery. Perform work under the supervision of physicians to provide quality orthopedic care for patients requiring immobilization and musculoskeletal treatment.
Responsible for up keep of orthopedic equipment and supplies.
Functional Responsibilities:- Ensures through his actions, either directly or indirectly, that a superior quality of medical treatment, compassion and understanding is given to every patient served at the care Hospitals and Clinics.
- Immobilizes injured extremities with portable splints and bandages. May use a spine board and cervical collar in emergencies under the direction of orthopedic team.
- Applies plastic splints and casts as ordered, for sprains and for closed, non-displaced fractures of the extremities under the direction of orthopedic team.
- Instructs the patient/care giver in care of the cast.
- Fits the patient with crutches and instructs him in crutch walking.
- Performs cast removal under the direction of orthopedic team.
- Maintains an adequate supply of cast materials.
- May assist in the Operating Room or Cast Room in Applying complex cast and traction set-ups.
- Provides standardized written information to patients and families regarding care of the cast and/or orthopedic appliance.
- Maintains orthopedic equipment, supplies, and cast cases census updated.
- Follows all policies and procedures documented for orthopedic technical procedures.
- Complies with hospital dress code.
- Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities.
A minimum of:
Education:- Diploma / certification in orthopedic technician category.
A minimum of:
- Two year of orthopedic technician experience.
- Valid Certification of Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Understanding of medical terminology
- Patient care and communication skills
- Ability to follow detailed medical instructions
- Physical stamina for standing and assisting patients
- Fluent in verbal and written English
- Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
