Position

Summary

Primary Care Physician – 16 hours per week (2 days per week).

Location:

Roanoke City Jail.

How YOU can Make an Impact
  • Provide comprehensive medical care to incarcerated individuals, diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of physical and mental health conditions in compliance with facility policies and clinical guidelines.
  • Conduct thorough medical assessments, including physical exams and health histories, and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Prescribe medications, therapies, and other interventions as necessary, ensuring safe and effective treatment for patients.
  • Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patient progress and evolving health needs.
  • Collaborate with physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated, holistic care.
  • Provide medical and psychiatric care for patients with mental health conditions in collaboration with licensed mental health clinicians and the psychiatrist.
  • Respond to and manage medical emergencies, including trauma, psychiatric crises, and other urgent health situations.
  • Provide health education and patient advocacy, educating inmates on managing chronic conditions and preventing health issues.
  • Maintain accurate, timely electronic medical records in compliance with HIPAA and facility protocols.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and adhere to infection control, safety, and security protocols.
  • Mentor and educate healthcare staff on best practices and evolving standards of care.
  • Assume leadership in healthcare operations, supporting and mentoring other providers.
  • Provide on‑call services as needed, including after‑hours and weekend care.
  • Collaborate with correctional officers and facility leadership to ensure secure and effective delivery of care.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
What We Ask of You
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted state license or credential authorizing practice in the applicable clinical role (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, DMD, NP, PA, RN, LPN, LMHP).
  • High School diploma or GED required;
    Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare, or related field preferred for applicable roles.
  • Completion of an accredited graduate or professional program for advanced clinical roles (e.g., medical school, dental school, nurse practitioner program).
  • Current valid DEA registration if applicable.
  • Board certification in a relevant specialty preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical practice, with at least 1–2 years in a correctional healthcare or underserved population setting preferred.
  • Experience diagnosing, treating, and providing healthcare services in a managed care or correctional facility setting.
  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required.
