Primary
Purpose:
The Intervener assists a student with deaf/blindness to actively participate in activities and provides a supportive and effective environment in which the student can learn. The intervener provides this service within the guidelines of the school, as set forth in its policies and procedures. The intervener works under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher and participates as a full education team member in developing and implementing the student’s IEP.
- High school diploma or GED
- Paraprofessional Aide certification from state of Texas
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Ability to physically manage students with motor and/or behavioral difficulties
- Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention
- Must be willing to participate in ongoing training in the area of deaf blindness
- Adhere to federal, state and local policies and procedures related to special education aides.
- Works to attain proficiency in all items listed on the “Intervener Portfolio Summary” self‑assessment.
- Participate in site based, regional, and statewide training in the area of deaf blindness.
- Provide direct support to a student with deaf blindness during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the IEP.
- Assist in maintaining student records, communication and daily log of information.
- Follow the student’s IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by related services staff.
- Assist with teacher‑planned activities, exercises and drills.
- Assist when needed in helping students in self‑care activities such as feeding, dressing and toileting.
- Assist in implementing the therapy programs which may require lifting and positioning.
- Assist in carrying out behavior interventions.
- Attend professional meetings as required.
- Visits or provides instruction in the student’s home as deemed appropriate by the IEP.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.

Working ConditionsMaintain emotional control under stress. Moderate standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, regular heavy lifting, and physical management of students. Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria and communicable diseases. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities. Must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or more; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non‑ambulatory students.
