Job Title: Accountant
Location: Virginia Transformer – Roanoke, VA
Department: Accounting
Position Summary
The Accountant plays a key role within the Accounting Department, responsible for the accurate recording, tracking, and reporting of financial transactions. This position ensures compliance with accounting standards and internal controls, supports timely invoicing and cost tracking, and contributes to budgeting and forecasting activities. The Accountant will collaborate cross-functionally to maintain financial integrity and support operational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting Functions
- Record, review, and reconcile financial transactions in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Maintain general ledger accounts and ensure accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
- Support internal controls and ensure all accounting activities comply with audit and tax requirements.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments as needed.
Billing & Accounts Receivable
- Generate and process customer invoices in a timely and accurate manner.
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on outstanding balances.
- Coordinate with operations and project teams to validate billing data and ensure proper revenue recognition.
Cost Accounting & Expense Management
- Track and analyze expenses across labor, materials, and overhead.
- Allocate costs to appropriate projects, departments, and cost centers.
- Support product and job costing efforts to evaluate profitability and efficiency.
- Prepare regular financial reports, including P&L summaries, variance analyses, and KPI dashboards.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
- Support internal and external audits by gathering required documentation and analysis.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and filings.
Collaboration & Business Support
- Partner with finance, procurement, supply chain, and operations teams to align financial data with business activities.
- Provide training and guidance on accounting procedures, expense tracking, and invoicing protocols.
- Serve as a resource for financial inquiries from internal stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Experience:
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- ERP system experience (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics).
- Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modeling.
Soft Skills:
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical capabilities.
- Effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Ability to manage deadlines and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CMA certification (or in progress).
- Working knowledge of revenue recognition and tax compliance principles.
- Familiarity with manufacturing cost accounting practices.
