How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:An onsite schedule is preferred. However, candidates residing in the following states may be considered for a remote and/or hybrid schedule:
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.
- Provide leadership, training, and guidance for other staff members. Research complex accounting transactions and recommend appropriate accounting treatment, understand and optimize end‑to‑end financial processes, and maintain current documentation of accounting processes and technical accounting approaches.
- Facilitate the growth and development of Staff Accountants by assigning tasks, reviewing their work products, assisting with training and development, onboarding new team members, researching problems and providing thoughtful solutions, communicating with relevant internal and external parties on financial matters, providing resolution of complex accounting issues, and directing work groups.
- Maintain comprehensive working knowledge of Carilion's financial processes, policies, and related systems (e.g., general ledger, patient accounting, accounts receivable, materials management, fixed assets) as they relate to the role's area of responsibility. Assist other staff members with development of related process and system knowledge.
- Prepare and review complex financial documentation and communications, including supporting schedules and financial reports required by bond agreements, auditors, regulatory bodies, and management for financial decisions and estimates such as health expense and revenue concessions.
- Assist in all aspects of Carilion's annual external audit and other internal and external audits, including reviewing staff audit schedules, engaging with auditors to answer questions, clarifying documentation, preparing financial statements and footnotes, and responding to additional requests.
- Interface and collaborate with other Carilion departments to initiate and develop process efficiencies and implement improvements aligned with overall organizational goals and mission.
- Assist with new accounting software system implementations or upgrades, including design of key processes, elements, and testing related to the area of responsibility.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate integration of operational and patient data systems with the overall ERP or financial systems. Apply sophisticated knowledge to assist in correct mapping between the two systems and develop and maintain databases for financial classification within the accounting systems.
- Stay abreast of accounting literature and developments in authoritative standards and interpretations as they relate to role and responsibilities.
- Provide in‑depth analysis of income statements and balance sheets on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis. Project depreciation expense for all Carilion affiliates, PTO liability, and assist other areas and managers as needed.
Education: Bachelors in accounting required or Masters Degree in Accounting or Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting preferred.
Experience: 6‑10 years of experience in the accounting field, required. Licensure/Certification s/Registration: CMA or CPA designation or exam qualification preferred but not required.

Must be able to understand interrelationships in a multi‑company environment, maintain a client‑service approach while considering system‑wide interests, meet frequent non‑negotiable deadlines while managing multiple priorities, possess general knowledge of PCs and office equipment, have excellent working knowledge of computerized accounting systems, spreadsheet, and word processing software (Microsoft Windows/Excel/Word preferred), and display excellent writing, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
