Performs responsible recreation work in accordance with the program standards assisting direct participant contact employees by providing one‑to‑one or small group support and assistance to participants with disabilities registered in Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) programs and youth participants of ACE Summer Camp. Assists instructors or leaders in carrying out planned activities, under the supervision of the Recreation Programmers. Performs responsible childcare and recreation work in accordance with the program standards for children at an assigned location.
Assists with planning and participating in organized childcare and recreational activities with children ages five (5) through twenty‑one (21) who have developmental disabilities. Staff follows pre‑determined program guidelines and reports on client progress and goals to empower clients to participate as independently as possible. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Actively supervise and support participants while in the program, motivating and engaging them in activities.
- Assist with planning and actively participate with staff and children in activities including games, music, arts, crafts, and playground activities, especially in a summer camp setting.
- Support instructors by setting up and/or cleaning up class/activity materials.
- Complete documentation for the program and submit to full‑time TRS staff within program time guidelines.
- Report and work on objectives for individual participants as assigned.
- Complete all required training and attend all mandatory meetings as set by TRS.
- Observe all activities to ensure the protection and safety of all participants.
- Serve as a van monitor supervising program participants while using County or City supplied transportation vehicles, ensuring seat‑belt use and appropriate behavior.
- Provide behavioral supports to participants during the program, including prompting, re‑direction, and positive reinforcement.
- Deliver individualized support to each child in all activity settings at ACE Camp.
- Follow the FISH philosophy while working in the TR program (Be Present, Choose Your Attitude, Make Their Day, and Play Appropriately).
- Provide correct sighted guide mobility techniques as needed and assist participants who use wheelchairs, including securing them in the van with tie‑downs.
- Education: High school graduation or equivalent required; must be 18 or over. Preferred: 2 years of college coursework in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation, Psychology, Special Education or related field.
- Experience: Some experience working with individuals (children or adults) with developmental disabilities, visual impairments, head injury related disabilities, and/or psychiatric disabilities.
- Certifications: Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification required; must obtain if not already held.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- General knowledge and interest in activities suitable for the assigned participant population.
- Ability to engage participants, encourage participation, and build effective relationships with co‑workers, participants and the public.
- Ability to supervise a group of activity participants and work with individuals of all age and ability levels.
- General knowledge, skill and interest in recreational activities suitable for children ages five (5) through twenty‑one (21) with developmental disabilities in a group setting.
- Additional Requirements: Must complete pre‑employment training, pass a criminal background and Child Protective Services screen, submit to a TB test, and provide references.
- Physical Demands: Medium physical strength; lift/ exert force 20‑50 lbs occasionally, 10‑25 lbs frequently, or up to 10 lbs constantly.
- Environment: Work in vehicle, outdoors, recreation centers, and school sites.
