Overview
Adams Construction Company is one of the oldest asphalt paving firms in Virginia. Since 1946, Adams has participated in the construction of every interstate throughout Virginia and most of the primary highways. Throughout the Company’s growth in Virginia and into North Carolina, it has strived to maintain a family culture in a corporate world.
Under general supervision of assigned superintendent, the Laborer performs a variety of manual or semiskilled tasks related to road building and maintenance of road building equipment and facilities.
Responsibilities- Site Prep & Cleanup:
Use shovels, brooms, and blowers to remove debris, milled asphalt, and dirt from the surface before and after the milling machine passes. - Equipment Support:
Assist the milling operator by guiding dump trucks for loading, clearing jammed material, and cleaning tools. - Safety & Traffic Control:
Set up, move, and dismantle safety cones, barricades, and signage. Direct traffic or assist with lane closures, following DOT and OSHA safety regulations. - General Labor:
Perform manual tasks, including raking, digging, and lifting materials and tools. Assist with the maintenance and cleaning of equipment, such as removing hardened asphalt from tools. - Tasks may include, but are not limited to jack hammering, shoveling, cleaning, traffic control or assisting with any other milling operation related task.
- Maintain constant awareness of ongoing operations in your surrounding area while safely and efficiently completing required physical tasks.
- The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
- The ability to lift and carry heavy loads on a day to day basis.
- The ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written directions, paying attention to detail.
- Have the ability and willingness to learn new things.
- The ability to stand for long periods of time (10-12 hours).
- High School diploma/GED.
- Prior construction or paving experience preferred but not required.
- Possesses a strong work ethic, teamwork and respect to all individuals.
- Able and willing to follow verbal instructions.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and have reliable transportation.
- Candidates must be able to work overtime, nights, and weekends, as projects demand.
- Candidates must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test as well as random tests if selected during employment.
