Position: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR 2025-26

Overview

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

Coordinate Comprehensive School Counseling Program:

Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Elementary School Counselor for the 2025-26 school year.

Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia prior to August 2025.

Position Description/Job Summary

Counselors will demonstrate the ability to establish productive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members. Counselors will provide individual and group counseling to students along with performing a variety of additional roles and functions.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

  • Provide academic, social, and career activities for students
  • Engage in individual and group counseling with students
  • Provide school counseling services for all students
  • Follow ASCA National model for School Counseling Code of Ethics
  • Gather, interpret, and use data regarding student as part of the counseling process
  • Demonstrate a warm and accepting attitude toward children, parents, families, staff, and stake holders
  • Make referrals and coordinate services to staff, community resources and public or private agencies
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators and other professional personnel
  • Provide for the annual evaluation of the comprehensive school counseling program in the school
  • Implement a program that reflects the Virginia Dept. Of Education SOL standards for counseling

Crisis Intervention

  • Assess students and provide resources for students and families
  • Serve on school crisis team
  • Lead student support interventions before, during, and after crisis situations
  • Identify and take appropriate action in problem/crisis situations

Threat Assessment Team Member

  • Member of threat assessment team
  • Attend required threat assessment training as offered
  • Participate in all threat assessments in assigned schools

Supports Families & Staff

  • Interpret counseling program to school staff, parents, students, and the community
  • Serve as a resource person to parents on the growth and development of their children
  • Coordinate in-service programming to assist the staff in understanding and meeting children's needs

Bullying Education & Prevention

  • Provide staff training on bullying prevention, intervention, reporting and policy
  • Provide student education on bullying prevention and reporting
  • Implement evidenced based bullying curriculum with fidelity
  • Lead bullying committee through school's core team
  • Coordinates the Bullying Prevention program

Supports Students

  • Provide developmentally appropriate classroom program activates for all students
  • Assist students in the development of positive and realistic self- concepts
  • Provide activities to help students understand themselves and their relationships with others

Pbis

  • Serve on PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) committee and coach/assist staff, student, and administration with PBIS program

Career Education

  • Maintain career portfolio for students,
  • Teach developmentally appropriate career lesson for each grade
  • Retain appropriate career documentation in career portfolio for each grade level

Other Duties As Required

  • Assist with the coordination and interpretation of standardized testing
  • Plan and coordinate orientation programs
  • Show concern for care and use of materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Member of the child study team
  • Attend staff trainings
  • Attend child study, 504, and IEP meetings as requested
  • Comply with confidentiality regulations and laws
  • Follow all RCPS policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned by principal and central office counseling

Minimum Job Requirements/Qualifications

Be able to perform multiple, highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions;
Be able to communicate effectively to implement desired actions;
Be flexible to independently or collaboratively work with others in a wide variety of circumstances;
Be able to analyze data and reports to help determine student needs within the division;
Be able to establish professional relationships and communicate effectively with administration, faculty, and parents;
Be able to set priorities and meet deadlines;
Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Education And Experience

Master's Degree in School Counseling

Experienced With Children And Adolescents, Required
