Job Description

Performs intermediate skilled work assisting teachers and students by facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, classroom staff, and other personnel in the school system; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude other duties if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position.   • Provide sign language interpreting during the school day in academic and non‑academic settings;
  • Interpret instructional conversation that is voiced, or signed, in the classroom using sign language modality appropriate for the student as determined in the IEP;
  • Provide interpreting during field trips, counseling sessions, and meetings with administrators or other building staff;
  • Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities, parent meetings, or other student needs when necessary and appropriately scheduled;
  • Prepare for interpreting classroom content using lesson plans and classroom materials to appropriately sign applicable vocabulary and concepts;
  • Work with available staff to arrange the best possible interpreter location appropriate to every activity;
  • Work to establish and maintain communication with students, teachers, and educational staff to be an effective team member while maintaining confidentiality within the team;
  • Direct questions regarding student academic progress or other concerns to the appropriate staff member;
  • Adhere to rules set by the school system and the EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct;
  • Establish healthy boundaries between self and students to encourage student self‑advocacy and independence;
  • Comply with district performance standards, evaluations, policies, and procedures;
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of sign language interpreting process; applicants must have a NIC, a minimum of VQAS Level II, or a 3.0 on the EIPA Performance Test with the expectation of earning a VQAS Level III, or EIPA 3.5 within two years; general knowledge of classroom procedures and instruction program; ability to sign accurately at a normal conversational rate for extended periods;

ability to establish and maintain appropriate and effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers and other school system staff; general knowledge of computer use (email, word processing, internet browsing, etc.).

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of general university course work supplemented by training in signing and considerable experience as an interpreter.

Physical Requirements

This is work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires standing, walking, fingering and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;

hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
