Under direction of the school principal, plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals. Supervises students, monitors outcomes, communicates with students, parents, staff, and community, develops and modifies instructional plans, maintains records, and monitors equipment use.
Essential Tasks- Instructs secondary school students in all phases of video production, including scripting, recording, editing, audio, lighting, directing, and computer graphics.
- Instructs students in the use of Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, and other video software.
- Demonstrates to students the proper operation and use of video production equipment.
- Develops clear and concise instructional lesson plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of preparation, instruction, and on-air time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction and adapts the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities.
- Uses a variety of instructional techniques appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and creates a safe, orderly, and effective environment for learning during class time and on-air productions.
- Instructs students in the proper care and use of video production equipment.
- Organizes storage areas and controls the use of materials and equipment to prevent loss, abuse, injury, or security breach.
- Makes minor adjustments to video production equipment and requests repairs as appropriate.
- Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and understanding and prepares regular progress reports.
- Conferences regularly with parents/guardians regarding behavior observations and the performance of students.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students.
- Maintains thorough records for each student.
- Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, video production equipment, and instructional aids.
- Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
- Keeps abreast of developments, research, and new technology in the field of mass communications.
- Supervises, monitors, and assists students in various after‑hour productions when applicable.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Must possess experience in television broadcasting and/or video production and possess excellent written and verbal skills. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of script writing, video production techniques and processes; demonstrated skills in the operation of a variety of editing, lighting, television/video camera and recording devices and related production equipment and possesses the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
Education and ExperienceMust possess a minimum of five years recent full‑time experience employed in the TV/video production industry. A high‑school diploma or technical career license is required. A bachelor’s degree, preferably in mass communications or a closely related field, is preferred. The candidate must be eligible for a full or provisional Virginia teaching license.
Physical RequirementsSignificant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily controlled temperature and clean classroom environment.
