Position: Health Occupations Teacher (11 month position)

Job Description General Responsibilities

Under direction of the school principal, plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.

Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

Essential Tasks
  • Provide instruction for the following areas:
    Introduction to Exploratory Health Sciences, Medical Terminology, and Certified Nurse Aide.
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways which maximize student learning.
  • Construct competency-based syllabi
  • Provide learning activities that meet course objectives
  • Meet learning needs of diverse student populations
  • Integrate available instructional technology when appropriate
  • Plan a program of study employing a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and instructional media that meets the student's needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals that comply with the Virginia Department of Education, CTE competencies, and Virginia Board of Nursing (CNA) requirements.
  • Exercise stewardship of school facilities and materials
  • Supervise students in clinical rotations
  • Conduct clinical evaluations of students. Maintain and update own nursing clinical competencies.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students
  • Articulate, accept, and uphold the mission and purpose of Roanoke City Public Schools
  • Stay current in subject matter through professional development activities
  • Serve as advisor for student organizations. (HOSA, Red Cross, SkillsUSA)
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position. Ability to compose routine reports consistent with the duties of this position. Communicate effectively using reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with students, faculty, staff, and administration. Work in team setting. Adhere to District, State, and Federal established deadlines for submitting reports and records related to student learning and student outcomes.

Maintain accurate records of student progress. Utilize assessment techniques to monitor student progress and success as outlined in the division assessment plans. Evaluate student progress utilizing SMART goals. Operate and stay current on appropriate instructional technology equipment. Demonstrate computer literacy and internet skills. Retrieve and manage information via technology. Demonstrate a willingness to provide online instruction. Computer program knowledge in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master preferred
  • RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Two years' experience as a registered nurse within the previous five years
  • Have at least one year experience in the provision of long-term care experience or one year previous teaching experience in a nurse aide education program or one year experience supervising nursing students in a nursing facility
  • AHA BLS Health Care Provider certified

Work Environment

Primarily controlled temperature and clean classroom environment.
