Job DescriptionGENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Alternative Learning Assistant provides supplemental, targeted academic support to identified students in accordance with Title I funding guidelines. This position focuses on intervention and skill development in reading, mathematics, and other academic areas aligned with the school’s Title I plan. The role supplements, and does not replace, core instructional services and does not function as a general classroom assistant. All work is performed under the supervision of a licensed teacher or building administrator.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The following duties are normal for this position. - Provide small-group or individual academic intervention to identified students.
- Reinforce skills and concepts previously taught by licensed instructional staff.
- Implement targeted instructional activities aligned with Title I school wide or targeted assistance plans.
- Support remediation and enrichment efforts designed to improve academic performance.
- Monitor and document student progress during intervention activities as directed.
- Prepare and organize instructional and intervention materials.
- Maintain a structured and supportive learning environment during supplemental instruction.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to align intervention services.
- Participate in required training and meetings related to Title I programming.
- Provide academic support during approved intervention periods.
- Perform additional duties consistent with Title I funding requirements.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willing to learn specialized instructional/management techniques employed with disabled students; ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with all students, parents, and staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma required. Associate’s degree or coursework in education preferred. Experience working with students in an academic support or intervention setting is desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent walking, standing, light lifting (up to 40 pounds) and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Duties typically performed in school settings to include: classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional attendance to parent conferences, building-level meetings, and division-wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary. Daily personal close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and medical professionals may be required.
Contact with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.
