Job DescriptionVirginia Western Community College is a two‑year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70‑acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast‑track workforce and continuing education courses.
The purpose of this position is to provide instruction and supervision in a laboratory setting to students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program in the School of Health Professions at Virginia Western Community College. In addition, lab instructors may be asked to assist with mentorship, orientation, and/or remediation.
Responsibilities- Provide instruction and supervision in laboratory sessions for Occupational Therapy Assistant students.
- Assist with mentorship, orientation, and remediation as needed.
- Plan and organize assigned laboratory teaching activities according to student level.
- Facilitate student learning experiences to ensure mastery of stated objectives.
- Evaluate student learning as described in program assessments.
- Orient students to laboratory setting while ensuring student safety.
- Adhere to all regulatory requirements for student supervision.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the program faculty.
- Attend all scheduled lab sessions on time and report any emergencies that affect attendance.
- Submit all required documentation on time.
- AAS in a specific healthcare discipline.
- Current Virginia license in the specific discipline.
- Up‑to‑date continuing education compliance.
- Two years of clinical experience in the professional discipline.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to plan and organize assigned laboratory teaching activities for program‑placed students according to student level.
- Ability to facilitate student learning experiences to ensure mastery of stated objectives.
- Ability to evaluate student learning as described in program assessments.
- Ability to effectively orient students to laboratory setting while ensuring student safety.
- Ability to adhere to all regulatory requirements for student supervision.
- Proficiency with all fundamental program‑specific skills and equipment, including but not limited to skills represented on the student skills list.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and program information.
- Ability to function in the role as a registered health professional and health professional educator.
- Ability to model a positive culture of a healthcare professional.
- Physical ability to meet the demands of a laboratory teaching schedule.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Prior teaching experience, preferable in a college setting.
- Experience using classroom technology.
- Experience working with clients with physical disabilities (including pediatric, youth, and adult populations).
- Experience working in pediatric clinical settings.
- Experience treating patients with developmental disabilities.
- Experience with assistive technologies and devices.
- Knowledge of kinesiology concepts.
