Transformer Testing Lead – Field Services

Location:

Roanoke, Virginia (Onsite when not traveling)

Travel:
Extensive Travel Required

Position Summary

The Transformer Testing Lead – Field Services will serve as a technical field leader responsible for overseeing transformer testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and deployment activities at customer sites. This role requires extensive travel and direct interaction with utility customers, EPC contractors, field technicians, and internal engineering and manufacturing teams.

The ideal candidate will bring strong hands‑on transformer testing experience combined with field deployment expertise and the ability to lead testing operations in energized, high‑pressure utility and industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead onsite transformer testing, commissioning, and deployment activities at customer locations
  • Perform and oversee electrical testing of power and distribution transformers during installation and startup
  • Support field energization, commissioning validation, and operational readiness activities
  • Troubleshoot transformer‑related electrical, mechanical, and field performance issues
  • Coordinate with customers, utilities, EPC contractors, and internal teams during field deployment projects
  • Interpret transformer test results and provide technical recommendations and corrective actions
  • Support field service teams during outages, emergency response situations, and startup activities
  • Ensure compliance with customer specifications, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and internal safety standards
  • Prepare and review field service reports, testing documentation, and commissioning records
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to field technicians and testing personnel
  • Support root cause investigations and warranty‑related field evaluations
  • Assist with development and continuous improvement of field testing procedures and deployment practices
  • Maintain strong customer relationships through professional communication and technical expertise
Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or related field preferred
  • 7+ years of hands‑on transformer testing, commissioning, or field service experience
  • Strong experience with:
  • Power transformer testing
  • Transformer commissioning
  • High‑voltage testing equipment
  • Winding resistance testing
  • Power factor testing
  • Insulation resistance testing
  • SFRA testing preferred
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills within utility or industrial electrical environments
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, transformer drawings, and technical documentation
  • Experience working in substations, utility environments, industrial plants, or field service operations
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety and lockout/tagout procedures
  • Ability to lead field activities independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication and customer‑facing skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout North America
