Position: CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR I

Reports To:

Construction Inspector II. Effective Date: 07-01-07. Revised: 04-01-22.

Summary

Responsible for inspecting materials and workmanship of water/sewer and related construction by contractors, developers, and other builders for compliance with plans, specifications and standards. Keeps progress records using Info Net Mobile or Info Net Desktop to document methods, materials, quantities, changes to plans and other construction related items. Informs contractors of deviations or errors and advises on corrective action. Takes samples of materials and performs field tests to verify quality.

Reviews plans and makes corrections or comments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Inspect materials and workmanship of water, sewer and related construction for compliance with plans, specifications and standards.
  • Keep progress records using Info Net Mobile or Info Net Desktop.
  • Communicate job progress with Project Manager.
  • Coordinate project work with other Authority departments and outside agencies.
  • Inform contractors of deviations or errors and advise on corrective action.
  • Takes samples of materials and performs field tests to verify quality.
  • Coordinate all repairs and maintenance of Engineering Services Division vehicle.
  • Review plans and make corrections or comments.
Qualifications
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work safely and obey all safety rules.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other Water Authority departments and the general public.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, orally or in diagram form.
  • Ability to work alone or in a team environment.
  • Good work ethic with strong emphasis on attendance, timeliness and completion of job assignments.
  • Ability to transfer as-built information onto construction plans.
  • Ability to use basic digital mapping (GIS).
  • Ability to do basic computer data entry and word processing.
  • Ability to review plans and make comments.
Education & Experience

High school or GED equivalent plus at least three (3) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificate, License & Registration Requirements
  • Valid Virginia driver's license, or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment; no more than six (6) demerit points on driving record if required to drive Water Authority vehicles.
  • Valid Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certificate, or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. Must be able to stand for extended periods, walk several miles during the day, reach overhead, lift, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds, climb ladders, and climb for inspection purposes. The role may involve repetitive movements using equipment.

Environment

Exposure to moderate or high noise, extreme outside weather, uneven, steep, slippery terrain, dusty and wet/humid conditions. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment operation, roadway hazards, outside hazards (poison ivy, bees, spiders, animals), confined spaces, sewer manholes, water vaults, wastewater pits, and protected trenches.
