Position: Geotechnical Engineer Senior Principal to Staff

Job Summary

The Principal Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for performing advanced engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient, and economic manner to accomplish assigned objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced geotechnical engineering work, including earthwork, retaining wall, slope stability, landslide mitigation, and foundation design.
  • Review and approve foundation and landslide mitigation designs.
  • Conduct subsurface investigations, desktop geologic research, and foundation design (drilled piers, steel grillages, steel caissons, micro piles, helical piles, driven piles, and guy anchors).
  • Leverage software tools such as SLOPE/W, FAD Tools, LPILE, SHAFT, GROUP, and Civil3D.
  • Collaborate with project teams, provide high‑impact communication, and lead design reviews.
  • Travel up to 20% to field locations for diagnosing geotechnical issues related to electric transmission lines and substations.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 8 years of related engineering experience for SG9 (or 12+ for SG10); a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program is required, or equivalent with a graduate degree.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; waiver may be granted with executive approval.
  • Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, planning, and organization skills.
  • Electric utility project experience strongly preferred.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary ranges:

  • Principal SG9: $130,000–$150,000
  • Staff SG10: $150,000–$170,000
Full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 8‑hour days; occasional overtime as required. A comprehensive benefits package supporting overall well‑being is offered.

Work Location & Travel

Site:
Roanoke, Virginia. Approximately 20% travel to field sites for geotechnical diagnostics.
