Overview
Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Environmental Project Manager to manage projects and oversee environmental permitting within the Mid-Atlantic Region.
This position requires thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local permitting requirements for development and construction of new projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
Responsibilities- Execution of and management for multiple environmental projects, including multi‑faced components
- Participate in business development activities: proposal and cost estimate development, client‑facing presentations, and maintaining and expanding client relationships in the Mid‑Atlantic business
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced staff
- Lead project teams on tasks such as field surveys, environmental permitting with federal, state, and local agencies, and review of required project reports and materials
- Daily interface with agencies to obtain approvals, submit permit applications, and prepare timely responses
- Daily interface with clients to develop relationships, build business, and expand services to new clients
- Manage work within budget and schedule expectations for each project
- Apply technical and creative solutions to natural resources permitting
- Advise clients on strategies to obtain permits and maintain compliance with regulations and permit conditions
- Provide guidance on regulations and permitting through USACE, USEPA, and various state and local regulations regarding environmental permitting of new projects
- Publish technical papers and deliver presentations at conferences
- Travel may be required as necessary and required by project or client commitments
- All other duties assigned by supervisor
- B.S. or M.S. in environmental science, environmental planning, or environmental/civil engineering; at least 7 years (10 years preferred) of experience executing and managing environmental permitting projects in the Mid‑Atlantic and the U.S.
- Experience across multiple market sectors (electric utility, renewable, oil & gas pipeline) and leading negotiations with regulators
- Knowledge of wetlands, threatened and endangered species, stormwater and erosion & sediment control, cultural resources and architectural history, NEPA regulations; technical expertise in one or more of these fields required
- Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and collaborative team player
- Experience guiding or overseeing staff and mentoring career development
- Ability to work in a dynamic, deadline‑driven team and with various audiences (regulators, public officials, clients)
- Experience with environmental permitting in other U.S. states desired
