Location:
Roanoke, VA (Preferred): Flexicrew Technical Services (FTS) is seeking a skilled Technical Services Field Engineer – Variable Frequency Drives & Motors to provide field service, troubleshooting, commissioning, maintenance, and technical support for industrial variable frequency drive (VFD), motor, and control systems at customer sites throughout North America and internationally.
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert for variable frequency drives (VFDs), motors, and control systems by providing on-site and remote engineering support.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve electrical, mechanical, and control system issues involving industrial VFDs and rotating equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and reliability assessments on customer equipment.
- Conduct commissioning, startup, installation, quality inspections, and performance testing of VFD systems to verify compliance with design specifications.
- Utilize remote diagnostic tools to analyze equipment failures and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Repair or replace defective components and restore equipment to proper operating condition.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to identify hardware, software, and system deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
- Implement approved engineering modifications and field change notices.
- Prepare detailed field service reports documenting inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting activities, repairs, and recommendations.
- Develop and distribute technical service advisories and engineering communications as required.
- Maintain accurate service documentation and update customer relationship management (CRM) systems with case information.
- Configure equipment to support supplier diagnostics and facilitate timely product issue resolution.
- Respond to customer service requests, including occasional after-hours emergency support on a scheduled rotation.
- Train customer personnel on equipment operation, troubleshooting, maintenance procedures, and safety practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve system performance and recommend additional products or services that add value for customers.
- Maintain compliance with all company, customer, and regulatory safety requirements while working in industrial environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of field engineering experience supporting AC variable frequency drives (VFDs), power conversion equipment, or industrial electrical systems.
- Strong knowledge of power distribution systems, power electronics, rotating machinery, and industrial motor control.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical, electronic, and control systems in industrial environments.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and engineering documentation.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex equipment failures.
- Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to work independently while managing multiple service assignments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 50%, including occasional short‑notice assignments.
- Five (5) or more years of technical services, field engineering, or customer support experience with AC and DC Variable Frequency Drives in industrial environments.
- Experience supporting metals processing, paper manufacturing, container crane systems, or other heavy industrial operations.
- Experience with legacy AC/DC VFD platforms, including AC/DC2000, AV/DC300, Innovation Series, and T250 systems.
- Controls engineering experience with industrial communication networks and protocols, including:
- ISBUS
- Profibus
- Modbus
- EGD
- Device Net
- TC-net
- MELPAC
- TOSLINE
- Experience programming, configuring, or troubleshooting PLC systems manufactured by Toshiba, GE, Rockwell Automation, or Mitsubishi Electric.
