Job Overview
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Family Services Supervisor to oversee a staff of 5–10 Family Services Specialists engaged in general and child welfare casework. The successful applicant will review requests for services, assign work, monitor service delivery, and review preliminary/investigative reports, ensuring appropriate practices and effective follow‑up. This is an exempt position.
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university in human services or a related field. BSW/MSW preferred. Minimum of three years of related experience in human services. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

Key Responsibilities- Review requests for services, assign work to specialists and monitor service delivery to clients in crisis and often life‑threatening situations.
- Review preliminary/investigative reports and conduct regular, periodic case reviews to ensure appropriate practices and effective follow‑up.
- Participate in initial interviews for hiring, promotions, disciplinary action, and termination.
- Gather pertinent information and evaluate criteria to recommend service delivery and resource utilization.
- Prepare reports and presentations regarding program activities and service needs.
- Attend community and state meetings as a department representative to explain programs, services, and regulations.
- Participate in staff conferences to determine service needs, eligibility, and resource utilization in complex cases.
- Provide program‑specific training and professional development to specialists.
- Supervise 5–10 employees in the assigned unit.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, training, planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
- Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field (BSW/MSW preferred).
- At least three years of related experience in human services.
- Knowledge of laws, policies, regulations, and safety rules.
- Strong reasoning ability: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, and procedural manuals.
- Physical ability to use hands, reach, talk or hear; light physical effort; occasional standing, walking, and lifting of up to 30 lb.
- Willingness to work outside normal hours and respond to routine and emergency situations.
Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you do not have a Virginia driver’s license, a certified copy of your driving record from your previous state of residence must be submitted.
Physical DemandsThe role involves light physical effort, occasional standing and walking, and lifting of up to 30 lbs. The work environment may expose the employee to outdoor conditions and moderate noise levels. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.
Work EnvironmentEmployees may be exposed to traffic hazards, violent individuals, communicable diseases, or rude/irate customers.
