Job Overview

The Chair, Department of Medicine at Carilion Clinic is responsible for leading the growth and development of medical education, research, and clinical strategic planning across the system. The role develops strategic plans for clinical services, manages the research program, and oversees community outreach and patient safety initiatives.

• Develop and implement strategic and tactical plans for service growth.
• Develop and manage community education and outreach programs.
• Create and expand research programs, fostering faculty and resident expertise and collaborations with local universities.
• Ensure excellence in graduate medical education.
• Develop, manage, and monitor budgets and financial performance targets for all programs.
• Establish, implement, and evaluate quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
• Develop effective clinical resource management processes related to the department.
• Build strong leadership relationships with medical staff.
• Support financial performance improvement through standardization and cost‑effective resource management.
• Review patient care and support performance‑monitoring committees.
• Assist chiefs of service with peer‑review responsibilities.
• Analyze industry trends and anticipate strategic responses.

• MD or DO degree required.
• Minimum 10 years clinical experience and 5 years progressive administrative/leadership experience.
• Board certification in a specific area relevant to the department.
• Track record of excellence in clinical care, medical education, and research.
• Management training and degree desirable.
• Expertise in process improvement, data analysis, and use of information systems.
• Experience in healthcare quality, resource management, and patient safety desirable.
• Ability to work with sophisticated information systems in clinical settings.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and high self‑awareness.
