The LPN (inpatient) practices practical nursing within the parameters set forth in Carilion Clinics' Plans for the Provision of Patient Care and functions under the direction of a registered nurse or physician. Partners with the RN in collecting data, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient/resident care; participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages; communicates frequently with team members, ancillary departments, and physicians;

contributes to the development of the patient/resident database and interdisciplinary plan of care; identifies patient/resident/family/caregiver educational needs, incorporates education into the plan of care, and documents; applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients/residents; implements prescribed therapeutic treatment plans and procedures; administers prescribed medication; advocates for patients, protects patient rights, and provides psychological, social, and cultural support;

contributes to Carilion's performance improvement activities; and supports orientation and career development of others, assigning tasks as needed.

• Practice practical nursing under RN or physician direction.
• Collect, plan, implement, and evaluate patient/resident care.
• Participate in the nursing process for patients of all ages.
• Communicate with team, ancillary departments, and physicians.

• Identify and incorporate educational needs into care plans.
• Apply knowledge of growth and development.

• Assist in orientation and career development of staff.
• Assign tasks as needed.

• Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
• Licensed to practice practical nursing in the state of Virginia.
• No prior experience required.
• Must complete de‑escalation training within four months of hire and maintain it thereafter.
• Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles and ability to collect and interpret patient data.
• Capable of providing care specific to patient age and needs in accordance with departmental policies.
