We are excited to offer an exceptional opportunity to join our Cardiothoracic Surgery Critical Care Team as a Physician Assistant / Associate (PA) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP / AGACNP / ACNP-AG). Our APPs play an integral role in comprehensive perioperative care, managing patients across the full continuum—from initial consultation through postoperative recovery and discharge. You will work alongside experienced cardiothoracic surgeons, APPs, and multidisciplinary professionals in a high-acuity, cutting-edge environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Critical Care Management:
    Manage patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic surgeries, including:
    • Aortic surgery
    • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
    • Thoracic surgery
    • Valve surgery
    • Mechanical Circulatory Support
  • Collaboration:

    Partner closely with attending physicians and APP colleagues in the management of advanced mechanical circulatory support devices, including:
    • ECMO
    • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABPs)
    • Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs)
    • Impella
    • Right Ventricular Assist Devices (RVADs)
Procedural Skills Development
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Central venous catheter placement
  • Arterial line insertion
  • Chest tube management
Patient Experience & Quality of Care
  • Optimize patient experience, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes
  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based perioperative care
  • Diagnostic & Clinical Decision-Making:
    Order and interpret relevant diagnostic studies and apply clinical judgment to guide timely and appropriate interventions
  • Emergency Response:
    Respond to critical and emergent situations, provide rapid assessment and stabilization until definitive treatment is implemented
Ideal Candidate

Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with strong interest or background in cardiothoracic surgery and/or critical care, comfortable practicing with a high level of autonomy in a fast-paced ICU setting, and committed to teamwork, clinical excellence, and continuous professional growth.

Requirements
  • Education:

    Graduate of an Accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Experience:

    0 years
  • Licensure/Certification:
    Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) and RN licensure required or Physician Assistant (PA) with DEA license. AHA BLS-HCP certification required;
    Advanced Life Support certification preferred. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
  • Other:
    Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers, possess good written and oral communication skills, and have computer literacy for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
