There are various specialty tracks for individualized interests which could include Peds, PICU, NICU, M/B, ED Observation Unit, Inpatient Rehab, and Psych. Training in ICUs to include Cardiac ICU, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Neurotrauma ICU, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Utilized in a long‑term unit assignment to reinforce a positive unit culture, build staffing consistency, and provide leadership and mentorship.
  • Perform consistent charge nurse responsibilities as business need requires.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products; titrate medications for pain control, sedation, and hemodynamic stability.
  • Age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments are completed, documented, and used to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age‑specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revise plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Work closely with trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
  • Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Conduct rapid assessments of trauma patients upon arrival, identifying critical issues such as airway, breathing, and circulation (ABCs), as well as monitoring vital signs.
  • Regularly monitor patients' vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation), and assess for changes in condition.
  • Assist in triage and provide emergency care, including CPR, airway management, IV therapy, and wound care.
  • Prepare and assist with trauma surgeries, including instrument sterilization, patient positioning, and assisting during operations as required.
  • Manage and care for trauma patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which may include patients with multiple injuries, organ failure, or those requiring ventilator support.
  • Provide care to patients' post‑surgery, monitoring for complications such as infection, hemorrhage, and organ dysfunction.
  • Provide wound care for injuries, including dressing changes, monitoring for infection, and assisting with wound debridement or closure.
  • Provide care and comfort to patients who are experiencing psychological trauma and offer crisis intervention when needed.
  • Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented, and documented appropriately.
  • Educate patients and their families on injury prevention, trauma recovery, and any specific post‑discharge care instructions.
  • Offer emotional support and resources to patients and families dealing with traumatic injuries, including helping them navigate the physical and psychological challenges of recovery.
  • Contribute to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
  • Consistently demonstrate the role of patient advocate, protector of patient's rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Act as a liaison between the patient and the health care team, ensuring the patient's needs are met and their voice is heard.
  • Implement protocols for patient safety, including fall prevention, infection control, and ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients.
