Overview
RN - Pulmonary Progressive Care position in a Magnet-designated environment. 8 Mountain PCU is a 20-bed progressive care unit caring primarily for medical patients, with a focus on pulmonary and respiratory conditions. Nurses provide high-acuity care through advanced monitoring, sound clinical judgment, and close collaboration with the care team. The unit emphasizes quality-driven practice, staff development, and patient-centered care. As a registered nurse, you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service and demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and teammates. RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages, utilizing delegation and critical thinking in a team-oriented approach.
Responsibilities- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
- Complete age-specific admission and ongoing assessments; document and use them to develop a plan of care.
- Collaborate with health care team, patient, and family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care; revise plan as patient status changes.
- Administer and document treatments and medications for patients of all ages using automated systems and electronic medical records.
- Identify patient/family educational needs; incorporate into the plan of care and document appropriately.
- Contribute to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
- Advocate for patients and provide psychological/social/cultural support as needed.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
- Support evidenced-based, quality patient care and performance improvement through clinical, leadership, or education pathways.
- Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances; plan strategies to reduce length of stay, optimize resource use, and improve outcomes.
- Serve as a role model for clinical practice, manage resources, establish priorities, and adapt the environment to meet patient care needs.
- Complete manager/director predetermined projects within established guidelines and time frames.
- Use problem-solving methods to resolve patient and personnel situations; participate in orientation of new employees.
- Provide feedback to staff and participate in unit, hospital, and system activities that involve staff input in decision making.
- Assist with providing education activities for the unit/department.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
Other: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
