7 West PCU is a 26-bed, high-acuity progressive care unit caring for complex patients who require continuous monitoring and frequent clinical intervention. Nurses practice in a fast-paced environment that demands strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and effective interdisciplinary collaboration. The Medical PCU specializes in the care and management of acute and chronic medical conditions and is occasionally responsible for surgical patients. A broad range of patient populations are served by this team.
Responsibilities- Practice practical nursing within the parameters set forth in Carilion Clinics Plans for the Provision of Patient Care and function under the direction of a registered nurse or physician.
- Partner with the RN in collecting data, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient/resident care.
- Participate in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.
- Communicate frequently with team members, ancillary departments, and physicians.
- Contribute to the development of the patient/resident database and interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Identify patient/resident/family/caregiver educational needs, incorporate education into the plan of care, and document accordingly.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients/residents.
- Implement prescribed therapeutic treatment plans and procedures.
- Administer prescribed medication to patients/residents.
- Advocate for patients, protect patient’s rights, and provide psychological, social, and cultural support.
- Contribute to Carilion’s performance improvement activities and support service area/facility/organization initiatives.
- Assist in the orientation and career development of others.
- Assign tasks to others as needed.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
- Experience: None required.
- Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Licensed to practice practical nursing in the state of Virginia.
- In Psychiatry and Behavioral Health: de-escalation training must be successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained going forward.

Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development, possesses the ability to collect data reflective of the patient’s status, interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
